A nice surprise: the creator of Sleepy Hollow (in which I am already playing a minor role as Lily) asked if I would accept a major role in another one of her audio productions: Dracula: The Modern Audio Drama. She said the deadline was tight but she wanted to invite me. I am not sure what happened but it looks like this is a revamp from another version of this story she attempted to do first. I wasn’t involved with the original, but now I’m being asked to play a major character in this one: Dr. Johanna Seward, who’s a gender-flipped version of the original Dracula character Dr. John Seward.

I asked for some background on the character and some sample character lines, because I don’t want to agree to play a character if I don’t “get” her. But this showrunner is actually really good with the character stuff and had a ton of great information on her–I got to see background info, a character bible, a lore manual, a breakdown of what her relationship is like with every other character–everything. It was very helpful and I’m super excited to play Johanna!

As an aside, I especially appreciate that she is gender-flipped from the original but that her relationships with the others are not, and therefore she gets to keep her crush on Lucy. (It is unrequited.) I love casually queer characters who get to just exist but don’t have a gigantic plot point hinging on their queerness.

The character is a doctor and loves a good mystery to solve, loves an opportunity to fix others so she doesn’t have to focus on the cracks in her own life. I love a character with motivations and complexity, and am looking forward to the challenge of voicing someone who’s masking sorrow and loss with being everyone else’s rock and fixating on success. The fact that she does not get upset easily seems like a great way to use emotion sparingly so it packs a punch when I bring it out.
