Another surprise: I’m already playing Johanna in Dracula: The Modern Audio Drama (and loving it!), and today I accepted a small part that’s nevertheless a huge challenge: the creator has asked me to take on the role of little Lilly, a flashback role as Renfield’s daughter.
Lilly is five years old and not a fully fleshed out character, but what I can gather is that she loves her dad (and her dad loves her), she’s imaginative and excitable, and she’s relatively fearless unless there’s something real to fear.
(We’re doing Dracula here. Obviously there’s something to fear.)
I find it kinda funny that she has the same name as the character I’m playing in Sleepy Hollow (which is by the same showrunner–I think she must like this name). And there’s sometimes some inconsistency in how it’s spelled in the materials (okay, smack me, I’m an editor); I had asked whether my Sleepy Hollow character is officially “Lily” or “Lilly” and was told it has one L, so since I’m seeing the thing with this child, I’m just going with the double L for this one to help distinguish them. 🙂
I’ll be honest: I like to do little-kid voices, but doing a child this young is actually intimidating. I have a pet peeve about how most adults (even professional actors) voice child characters, and can’t stand the fake pitched-up pinchy sounds and exaggerated innocence some of them choose to portray kids. I don’t want to make those mistakes. But I am indisputably an adult and I’m sure my voice sounds like an adult. This will be a challenge and I will likely overthink it. We’ll see what happens.
