I’ve been offered a small part in the new show Mr. Mason’s Weekend Hotline! I’ll be playing an unnamed caller (#3) who calls in to a radio show and acts like a weirdo to the host.

I was shortlisted on September 5 and received the offer September 10. I didn’t try out for any other roles because I just liked this one, and I’m so glad I turned out to be right for it.

This is a cool one because I’ll be basically doing a monologue for my whole part. I call in to a radio show and tell the host all about a dream I just had . . . about him. And the only character stuff I know about this unnamed caller is that she just woke up when she called and she seems to have something wrong about her, so I have to play her in a sort of uneven, off-kilter way. I love a chance to give weird reads. It keeps things interesting. I will have a phone filter put over my voice for this performance.

I’m super interested in the Night Vale-ian vibe of this radio show–the fact that the number for the radio show is unpublished but people still manage to call in; the fact that one of the plot points involves someone appearing in the studio and finding out there’s no exit; the fact that every caller has their own story and can paint a whole world in a couple of minutes. The radio-show format also lends itself well to easy production, so I’m hoping it’ll come together quickly so I can hear (and share) the final product!
