Today I was chosen to play Mara in an upcoming science fiction audio drama called Ailanthus: The Eclipse.
Ailanthus: The Eclipse follows a cargo ship’s crew as their pasts begin to catch up to them. Navigating local magistrates, imperial outposts, raiders, and an organization the captain really never wanted to meet again, each crew member has a secret that slowly unravels as they travel through inhabited space.
This process was a little bit of a roundabout one! I initially saw the casting call for the main cast and was intrigued by the fact that the characters generally weren’t designated any gender; they were referred to by their position on a spaceship, and I really liked that the voice actors would be able to define some particulars for these characters. I channeled my inner Captain Janeway and auditioned to be the ship captain on May 19, 2026. I got shortlisted for the role on May 31, but I was ultimately passed over and someone else got the role. Then, when I saw the show was looking for supporting cast, I figured hey, they liked me enough to shortlist me last time, and decided to try out for the smaller recurring role of Mara, the sister of one of the crew members who provides child care for his daughter. I was offered the part June 23 but the creator also wanted me to decide if I would rather have a different role I didn’t try out for. After getting more information, I decided to stick to playing Mara and was officially cast on June 25.
This is not a large role but I like what I know about it.
