About the show: Ailanthus: The Eclipse follows a cargo ship’s crew as their pasts begin to catch up to them. Navigating local magistrates, imperial outposts, raiders, and an organization the captain really never wanted to meet again, each crew member has a secret that slowly unravels as they travel through inhabited space. This is a sci-fi audio drama with a found family vibe, citing fan favorites Firefly, Deep Space Nine, and Mass Effect as inspiration.
Creator’s Character Description: Mara is the quartermaster’s sister and is currently the guardian of her niece due to complications in the quatermaster’s life. Mara is exhausted and stressed, and often frustration bubbles up in her interactions with her sibling. Regardless, she loves her niece and her sibling but very much wishes circumstances were different.
What do I like best about playing this character: I enjoy the idea of reminding the listeners of a world outside the ship. Life is going on outside of their world. One thing I also really like about Mara is that she isn’t just a typical generous and motherly caretaker. She clearly doesn’t take this out on the child she’s minding, but it’s nice to have a female character in a science fiction work who doesn’t just exist to take care of somebody else’s kid with no feelings of her own. I enjoy complex sibling relationships in fiction and I’m excited to be half of one.
What do I like least about playing this character: Nothing about her specifically. It’s unfortunate that I won’t get to show up that often–I don’t get to be in every episode.
